In 2007, the Gaurs spearheaded the Newark Museum exhibition “INDIA: Public Places – Private Spaces”. Curated by Paul Sternberger and Gayatri Sinha, this was first and to date the largest exhibition of Indian photography and video at a museum in the North America. During this exhibition the Gaurs developed an interest in collecting contemporary Indian photography.
Looking In | Looking Out at the Gaur gallery featured works of 19 photographers - Ravi Agarwal, Atul Bhalla, Sheba Chhachhi, Shilpa Gupta, Jitish Kallat, Naveen Kishore, Riyas Komu, Annu Palakunnathu Matthew, Akbar Padamsee, Pushpamala N., Ram Rahman, Raghu Rai, Rashid Rana, Gigi Scaria, Ketaki Sheth, Dayanita Singh, Raghubir Singh, Vivan Sundaram, and Vivek Vilasini
This exhibition was initially presented at the Stephen D Gallery of Massachusetts College of Art and Design, Boston, MA in 2015 and a catalog was published in conjunction with the exhibition. Most of the works in tis exhibition have since been gifted to the Smithsonian National Museum of Asian Art to be preserved, researched and exhibited.
