Umesh and Sunanda Gaur have been collecting modern and contemporary Indian art that focuses on the artistic expression that has emerged from India since the 1940s. The New Jersey based encyclopedic collection of more than 600 objects includes works by well-established Indian modernists, contemporary artists, photographers, printmakers and indigenous artists.
The Gaurs motivation to collect modern and contemporary Indian art is the pure joy of enjoying the visual aesthetic and collecting. They are simply intrigued by each and every work in their collection and feel a special bond to the works due to their Indian heritage. They do not feel that a collector is the owner of a work. Instead, Gaurs feel that they are privileged to be custodians of these works in their lifetime, preserving them for the next generation because these works will outlive us and last forever.
The Gaurs enjoyment of collecting is greatly enhanced by sharing the collection with a wider community of art lovers. In particular, they greatly enjoy working with museums in promoting modern Indian art in America.
Jeffrey Wechsler has been the consulting curator for the Gaur Collection since 2002 when Umesh and Jeffrey co-curated an exhibition of Indian modern and contemporary art at Rutgers University Zimmerli Art Museum. Jeffrey was the senior curator at the Zimmerli, retiring in 2013 after 36 years of service.
Jeffrey is a scholar of abstract expressionism, women's art and Asian as well as Indian art and has authored numerous publications. He curated many exhibitions while he was at the Zimmerli and continues to do so at several galleries in the greater New York - New Jersey area.
