This inaugural exhibition in the Gaur Gallery was curated by Jeffrey Wechsler and the Gaurs.
The human body has been the focus in India art for several millennia. The exhibition presented about 50 works created by artists since India’s independence in 1947. Through the theme of the body, these modernists addressed social issues, beauty, gender roles and hierarchies of power. These aesthetically celebrated works also illustrated how Indian culture and values as well as ideals of beauty and gender are woven into the Indian psyche.
